101 Cartoons

Hilary Allison
Jan 6 – 27, 2023

The single-panel cartoon is an art form that combines the languages of illustration, humor, and often text, to convey an idea. 101 Cartoons is one cartoonist’s collection of favorite ideas, and an exploration of what makes a cartoon funny. Differences in spoken language and regional style introduce a new dimension, when the American cartoonist Hilary Alison endeavors to learn—and publish in—German. How do cartoon punchlines translate between English and German, particularly when the cartoon itself is a satire of advertising copy, a joke about culture, or a riff on established motifs? On one wall, viewers are invited to collaborate by submitting their own captions, in whatever language they choose.
